Mashy Putting Guide
Putting in Mashy is drag and release: pull back from the ball to set the line and strength, then let go. The skill is reading the slope and judging pace, and it matters more than anything else because only a putt can drop in Mashy.
Chips and full shots that reach the cup lip out. So every hole ends with a putt, and good putting is the shortest route to lower scores.
How the putting controls work
- Drag back from the ball. The direction you pull sets the line (the ball goes the opposite way), and the distance sets the strength.
- Watch the guide. A guide line shows where the putt starts. How much of the path it shows depends on your putter.
- Release to hit. Let go and the ball rolls.
The longest putt you can hit is 26 yards. From further away than that, chip on first.
Reading a Mashy green
Mashy greens aren't flat. Each one has a tilt plus a few mounds, and the ball follows the slope as it slows down. You have two helpers.
- The green read overlay colours the green by height: warm colours are high ground, blue is low ground. Water runs downhill, and so does your ball: it will drift from the warm areas towards the blue.
- Slope arrows appear only where the green is steep. If you see one near your line, expect a big break there.
You can turn the green read on or off in Settings. If you're learning, leave it on.
Pace: why firm putts lip out
The cup is small, and a ball moving too fast can catch the edge and spin away. Mashy shows this as a putt that lips out or is too firm. The further from the centre of the cup the ball arrives, the slower it has to be travelling to drop.
That gives you the main rule of Mashy putting: arrive at the hole slowly. A putt dying into the front of the cup can fall in off the edge. A firm putt needs to be dead centre.
Long putts and short putts
| Distance | What to aim for |
|---|---|
| Over 15 yards | Leave it close. Pace first, line second |
| 5 to 15 yards | Pick the high side of the break and roll it to stop just past the hole |
| Inside 10 feet | The view zooms in. Commit to a line and hit it firmly enough to hold it |
Inside 10 feet the view zooms in on the hole, and the flag is taken out and laid on the far side of the cup. This is the putt you should make most of the time, so use the zoom to look at the slope right around the hole.

Five habits that save putts
- Play the high side. A putt that misses above the hole still has a chance to fall in. One that misses below never does.
- Look at the last yard. The ball breaks most when it's slow, near the hole, so the slope around the cup matters more than the slope near your ball.
- Pull less for downhill putts. If the colour goes from blue under your ball to warm at the hole, you're putting uphill; the reverse means downhill. Downhill putts need much less pull.
- Get the first putt close. On a par 3, a green hit in one and two putts is still par. Avoiding three-putts saves more shots than holing long ones. More on that in how to stop three-putting.
- Land approach shots below the hole. Your iron shot sets up the putt. An uphill putt is easier to judge than a fast downhill one.
Putter upgrades
The free Shed Blade shows a 4-yard guide. The Red Mallet (50 coins) shows 10 yards, enough to see the break begin. The Gold Putter (90 coins) shows the whole putt, break and all. The Pro Shop guide lists everything else.
Try it in Mashy
The best way to learn a green is practice mode: open any hole of the selected course in Mashy, hit onto the green, and try putts from different spots to see how the slopes behave.
Frequently asked questions
How do you putt in Mashy?
Drag back from the ball and release. The direction of the drag sets the line, with the ball rolling the opposite way, and the length of the drag sets the strength. A guide line shows the start of the putt, and the longest putt you can hit is 26 yards.
Why does my putt lip out in Mashy?
It was travelling too fast when it reached the hole. A ball arriving at the centre of the cup can drop at a decent pace, but the further off-centre it arrives, the slower it must be going. Aim for the putt to be dying as it reaches the hole.
What do the colours on the green mean in Mashy?
That's the green read overlay. Warm colours show high ground and blue shows low ground, so the ball will drift from warm towards blue as it slows. Slope arrows also appear where the green is steep, and you can switch the overlay off in Settings.
Can you chip in on Mashy?
No. In Mashy only a putt can drop, so chips and full shots that reach the cup lip out. The best you can do with a chip is leave it close for an easy putt, which on a par 3 means a tee shot onto the green and one putt is a birdie 2.
Which putter is best in Mashy?
The Gold Putter, at 90 coins, shows the whole putt and its break, which makes long putts much easier to judge. The Red Mallet, at 50 coins, shows a 10-yard guide and is a good middle step. The free Shed Blade shows 4 yards.
