Mashy Practice Mode
Practice mode in Mashy lets you play any hole of the selected course, as often as you like. Nothing is on the line: practice rounds earn no coins, don't go on leaderboards and can't be shared.
That freedom is the point. It's where you learn a tough hole, try a different club or work on one part of your game without spoiling a card.
How to start practice
- Pick a course at the top of the game menu.
- Choose practice.
- Pick the hole you want from that course's nine.
- Play it, then play it again, or move to the next hole or back to the menu.
You can switch courses at any time by going back to the menu and picking another one.
What practice is good for
| Goal | What to do in practice |
|---|---|
| Learn a new course | Play each hole once, just to see the layout |
| Beat a problem hole | Replay the hole that keeps costing you shots |
| Fix your timing | Hit the same tee shot again and again with one club |
| Learn the greens | Get onto the green, then try putts from different places |
| Test a new club | Play a hole with your new irons or putter after a Pro Shop buy |
Four practice routines
The one-club drill
Choose a par 3 and hit the same club every time. Watch where the ball finishes relative to your third tap: early pulls it left, late pushes it right. After ten goes you'll know your timing tendency better than after ten full rounds.
The problem hole
Every course has one hole that keeps costing you a double bogey. Play it five times in a row, trying a different plan each time: a shorter club off the tee, a different line round the trouble, a safer aim at the green. Keep the plan that worked and take it into stroke play.
The putting ladder
Get onto a green, then try putts of different lengths: one short, one medium, one long. Turn on the green read overlay and watch how the ball drifts from warm (high) ground towards blue (low) ground. Inside 10 feet the view zooms in, so practise those too. The Mashy putting guide explains the controls in detail.
The bunker test
Find a hole with a bunker, aim into it on purpose, and practise getting out. In Mashy an early tap in sand comes out heavy and short, a late tap comes out thin and runs on, and a low shot can catch the lip and roll back in. Knowing how your misses behave takes the fear out of sand. For the real-world technique, see how to hit out of a bunker.
Practice with a purpose
Hitting balls without a goal doesn't teach much, in Mashy or on a real range. A few rules help:
- Practise one thing at a time. Tee shots, then approaches, then putts.
- Keep a simple score. Count how many tee shots in ten hit the green. Try to beat it next time.
- Finish with a real round. Take what you learnt into stroke play or the daily, where it counts.
- Stop when you're tired. Rushing taps out of boredom builds bad habits.
More ideas for the real course are in short game practice drills.
Practice before the daily
The daily course counts only your first card, so practice is the place to warm up. Select the same course and play a hole or two first. The pins and wind may differ from the daily's, but the layout is the same, so you'll know where the trouble is.
Try it in Mashy
Open Mashy, pick a course and choose practice. You can play as a guest, so it's a good way for a new player to learn the swing before a first full round.
Frequently asked questions
Do you earn coins in Mashy practice mode?
No. Practice mode earns no coins, even for birdies. Coins come from stroke play, the daily and closest to the pin, with up to 20 a day from play. Practice is for learning holes and fixing your swing without anything on the line.
Do practice rounds go on the Mashy leaderboard?
No. Practice rounds have no leaderboard and can't be shared, because you can replay any hole as often as you like. Stroke play, closest to the pin and the daily are the modes that put your score on the course leaderboard for logged-in players.
Can you practise any hole in Mashy?
You can practise any hole of the course you've selected. Mashy has five courses of 9 holes each, so pick the course at the top of the game menu first, then choose practice and the hole you want to play.
Is practice mode the same as stroke play?
The holes are the same, but practice lets you pick a single hole and replay it as often as you like. Stroke play takes you through the course's 9 holes in order, counts every stroke, earns coins for birdies and eagles, and puts your score on the leaderboard.
Do I need an account to use practice mode?
No. Guests can play every mode in Mashy, including practice, straight from the browser with no download. Logging in with an emailed six-digit code is only needed if you want to save scores across devices, appear on leaderboards or use the Pro Shop.
