Browser Games to Play at Work

· 5 min read

The best browser games to play at work are short, quiet and need nothing installed. They run in a normal browser tab, can be muted, and are easy to stop the moment a message comes in. Play them on a proper break, and they're a reset rather than a distraction.

What makes a game work-friendly

  • No download. Many work laptops block installs, and you shouldn't need IT's permission to take a break.
  • Quick to start. If it takes longer to load than to play, it's the wrong game.
  • Short sessions. A round, puzzle or level should fit inside five or ten minutes.
  • Mutable. Sound off by default, or one click to turn it off.
  • Easy to stop. Natural breaks between rounds or holes, so you can close the tab without losing much.
  • Nothing awkward on screen. If a colleague walks past, a word puzzle or a golf course is fine.

A shortlist by type

Word and logic puzzles

Wordle and Connections from The New York Times are the obvious picks: one puzzle a day, a few minutes each, silent, and over before you know it. Sudoku and crosswords do the same job if you prefer numbers or clues. The daily format is a built-in limit: once it's done, you're done.

Classic single-player games

2048, the sliding-number puzzle by Gabriele Cirulli, is quiet and can be dropped at any moment. Solitaire and Minesweeper are the original office games, and you can find free browser versions of both. Google also hides playable versions of a few classics in its search results, such as Snake and Minesweeper.

The Chrome dinosaur game. Chrome's offline T-Rex runner appears when you lose your connection, and you can also open it by typing chrome://dino into the address bar. It's endless, so set yourself a limit.

Short sports games

A sports game with clear rounds suits a break well, because each hole, frame or point is a natural place to stop. Mashy is a free pixel-art golf game that runs in any browser tab: nine short holes take about ten minutes, and a single hole in Practice mode takes a minute or two.

Why golf suits a work break

Every golf hole is a small, separate challenge: play it, see the result, and decide whether you've got time for another.

In Mashy, you aim, then use a three-tap swing meter: tap to start, tap to set power, tap again at the sweet spot. On a desktop the Space bar swings, which keeps your hand on the keyboard. In Settings you can turn off the music and sound effects, and switch off the flyovers and zooms if you prefer a calmer screen. It also runs on a phone in portrait, if you'd rather step away from your desk.

Ground rules for gaming at work

  1. Check your company's policy. Most workplaces are fine with games on a break; some aren't.
  2. Play on breaks, not in meetings. A camera-off golf round still shows on your face.
  3. Set a limit before you start. One puzzle, one round, or one coffee's worth.
  4. Prefer daily or round-based games. Endless games are the ones that eat lunch breaks.
  5. Keep it social, if you like. A shared daily score is a good conversation starter. For a team version, see the office golf tournament plan.

Frequently asked questions

What games can I play at work without downloading anything?

Anything that runs in a normal browser tab: daily word puzzles like Wordle, number puzzles like 2048 and Sudoku, browser versions of Solitaire and Minesweeper, and short sports games such as Mashy. None of these need an install, so they work on most locked-down work laptops, as long as the sites themselves aren't blocked.

Is it OK to play games at work?

It depends on your employer, so check your company's policy first. Most workplaces are relaxed about short games during a proper break, much like reading the news or scrolling a phone. Keep it to breaks, keep the sound off, and choose games with natural stopping points so a quick game doesn't become an hour.

What is a good quiet game to play at work?

Choose games that are silent or easy to mute. Word and number puzzles are naturally quiet. In Mashy, Settings let you turn off the music and sound effects, and you can switch off the flyovers and zooms too. Pick games with clear rounds, so a quick break stays quick.

How long does a round of Mashy take?

A full nine-hole round takes about ten minutes, and you can stop after any hole. Closest to the pin mode is shorter, with one tee shot on each of the course's par 3s. Practice mode lets you play a single hole in a minute or two, as often as you like.

Can I play Mashy on a work laptop and my phone?

Yes. Mashy runs in the browser on desktop and on phones in portrait, with nothing to install. If you log in with an emailed six-digit code, your scores are saved across devices, so a round on your laptop and a round on your phone both count towards the same account.
