Run a 10-Minute Golf Tournament for Your Team

· 4 min read

Team golf days are great, but they cost a day, a booking and a lot of hired clubs. And half the team doesn't play golf. Here's a smaller version that fits into a lunch break or the end of a Friday call: a ten-minute office golf tournament that anyone can play on their laptop or phone, wherever they're working.

What you need

  • Mashy: a free pixel-art golf game that runs in the browser. There's no download, and nobody needs to know how to play golf.
  • A group chat or a channel for results.
  • Ten minutes.

Why it works for teams

  • Everyone plays the same course. Mashy's daily course has the same pin positions and the same wind for every player that day, so it's a fair contest.
  • Only the first card counts. No replaying until someone gets lucky.
  • It's easy to pick up. A three-tap swing and a drag-to-putt. Non-golfers often beat golfers.
  • It's short. Nine short holes take about ten minutes.
  • It works anywhere: desk, kitchen, train or home office.

The 10-minute plan

Before you start (2 minutes, one person)

  1. Open playmashy.com and log in with your email (it's a six-digit code, no password).
  2. Go to the Clubhouse and choose INVITE FRIENDS, then COPY INVITE LINK.
  3. Paste the link in the team chat with the start time.

Anyone who opens the link and logs in joins your clubhouse, and everyone in it shows up on the same daily board.

The tournament (10 minutes, everyone)

  1. At the start time, everyone opens Mashy and picks Daily from PICK A GAME.
  2. Play the nine holes. It's one go each.
  3. Check TODAY'S BOARD in the clubhouse, which ranks everyone by their daily score.
  4. Post your result: at the end of a round, SHARE WITH YOUR FRIENDS copies a spoiler-free grid of coloured squares, one per hole.

The prize-giving (2 minutes)

Announce the winner, the best single hole and the most heroic disaster. Done.

Formats to keep it interesting

Stroke play (the default)

Lowest total wins. Simple, fair, and the daily board does the work for you.

Closest to the pin (5 minutes)

Short on time? Use Closest to pin mode: one tee shot on each of the course's par 3s, and the distances from the pin add up. Lowest total distance wins. It's ideal for a stand-up meeting or the end of a call.

Team scramble

Split into teams of three or four. Everyone plays the daily, and on each hole the team counts its best score. The lowest team total wins. It's a golf scramble without having to share a ball.

Weekly league

Play the daily every Friday and keep a running table. Award points for each week's finish (10 for first, 8 for second, and so on) and crown a champion at the end of the month or quarter.

Skins

Compare cards hole by hole: the lowest unique score wins the hole, and ties carry over. See wolf and skins for the full rules.

Tips for organisers

  • Pick a regular slot. Friday at 4pm or after the weekly all-hands works well.
  • Keep prizes silly: a trophy from a charity shop, choosing the next team lunch, or the right to name the office plant.
  • Celebrate the worst hole too. It keeps beginners in the game.
  • Don't make it mandatory. The fun comes from the people who want to play.
  • Play the daily on the day. The course changes every day, so everyone has to play the same day's course.

Old-school office golf

If you're all in the same office, you can still do it the traditional way: a putter, a paper cup on its side and a corridor. Nine "holes" round the furniture, one shot each, lowest score wins. Combine it with the Mashy daily for an in-person and online decathlon.

Ready to tee off?

Open Mashy, copy your clubhouse invite link and send it to the team. The first round takes ten minutes.
