Games to Play in 5 Minutes

· 5 min read

Good games to play in 5 minutes need almost no setup, have clear rules, and end with a result. Five minutes is enough for a daily puzzle, a few rounds of a word game with friends, or a short golf challenge in your browser, as long as nobody has to read a rulebook first.

Here are ideas sorted by who's playing, so you can pick one and start.

Five-minute games on your own

  • A daily puzzle. Wordle, a mini crossword or a Sudoku. One puzzle, then it's done.
  • A short sports challenge. One hole of golf, a single frame or a penalty shoot-out. Sports games are full of small, complete chunks.
  • Beat your own score. Pick any quick game and try to beat yesterday's best, once.
  • A memory test. Look around the room for thirty seconds, close your eyes and list everything you can remember.

Five-minute games for two

  • Twenty questions. One person thinks of something; the other gets twenty yes-or-no questions to guess it.
  • Noughts and crosses. Best of five. Quick, and every child knows it.
  • Word chain. Say a word; the next word must start with the last letter. Hesitate for more than five seconds and you lose.
  • Hangman. One word each, then swap.
  • Head-to-head golf. Both play the same short challenge online and compare totals. More on that below.

Five-minute games for a group

These work at a party, in a classroom or at the start of a meeting.

  1. Two truths and a lie. Each person says three facts about themselves; everyone guesses the lie.
  2. Categories. Pick a letter and a category, such as animals beginning with B. Go round the circle until someone gets stuck.
  3. Would you rather. Quick, harmless and good at warming up a quiet room.
  4. Closest guess. Ask a question with a number answer, such as how tall the building is. Closest guess wins the round.
  5. Rock, paper, scissors tournament. Pairs play off, winners move on, and the whole group cheers the final.

The trick is choosing a game with a natural end. Endless games feel quick but rarely stop at five minutes.

A five-minute golf challenge

Golf sounds like a four-hour game, but a small slice of it fits a short break nicely. In Mashy, a free pixel-art golf game that runs in the browser, there are two ways to play in about five minutes.

Closest to the pin. You get one tee shot on each of the course's par 3s. The distances from the pin, in feet, add up, and the lowest total wins. It's a handful of shots, so it fits a short break easily, and it's ideal for comparing with a friend or a group. See closest to the pin explained for how the format works in real golf too.

One hole in Practice mode. Pick any hole on the selected course and play it as often as you like. A single hole takes a minute or two, so you can try it two or three times and see if you can beat your score.

The swing is a three-tap timing meter: tap to start, tap to set power, and tap again at the sweet spot. You'll get the hang of it within a few shots, which is exactly what a five-minute game needs.

If you have ten minutes rather than five, the full nine holes fit; see a quick golf game for your coffee break.

Try it in Mashy

Open Mashy, tap TEE OFF NOW to play as a guest, and choose Closest to the pin. Set a timer for five minutes if you're worried it'll grow into ten.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good game to play in 5 minutes with no equipment?

Twenty questions, word chain and categories all need nothing but people. They have simple rules everyone already knows, can be stopped at any moment, and work for children and adults. For a group, two truths and a lie is a good warm-up because everyone gets one turn to speak.

What online games take about 5 minutes?

Daily puzzles such as Wordle, a mini crossword or Sudoku usually take a few minutes. Short sports games also fit well. In Mashy, Closest to the pin mode is a handful of tee shots on the course's par 3s, and Practice mode lets you play a single hole in a minute or two.

How do you play closest to the pin in Mashy?

You hit one tee shot on each of the selected course's par 3 holes. The distance from the pin on each one, in feet, is added together, and the lowest total wins. There's no putting, so it's quicker than a full round and good for comparing with friends.

What are quick games to play in class?

Categories, word chain, twenty questions and a closest-guess number quiz all work in five minutes with a whole class. They need no materials and let you stop when time runs out. Rock, paper, scissors played as a knockout tournament is a good way to end a lesson on a lively note.

Can a 5-minute game still be competitive?

Yes. Give everyone the same challenge and one attempt, then compare. A shared daily puzzle or the same golf course with the same wind makes results fair. Keeping a running score over a week turns five-minute games into a proper competition without making any single session longer.
