The History of Golf Video Games

· 5 min read

The history of golf video games runs from blocky top-down holes on early consoles to photo-real courses, motion controls and games you play on a phone. Golf suited computers from the start: it's turn-based, the course can be shown from above, and a swing can be reduced to a few well-timed button presses.

The early years: a green screen and a flag

The first home golf games were very simple. Atari released Golf for its 2600 console around 1980: a tiny golfer and a few coloured blocks for the fairway and green. Nintendo's Golf (1984) was a big step up, with 18 holes, wind and a power gauge, and it taught millions of Famicom and NES players what a golf game should feel like.

The home computer era: the swing meter arrives

In the mid-1980s, golf moved onto home computers, and the swing became a skill in its own right.

  • Leader Board (1986): from Access Software. It popularised the three-click swing: start, set the power, set the accuracy. See the history of the three-click swing.
  • Links (1990): the same team's follow-up, with detailed courses based on real ones.
  • PGA Tour Golf (1990): EA's first golf game, on home computers and then the Mega Drive, starting a series that ran for decades.

The console boom: arcade golf and characters

The 1990s split golf games into simulations, chasing real courses and players, and arcade golf: bright, fast and forgiving. Neo Turf Masters (1996) on the Neo Geo is still loved for its pace. Hot Shots Golf (1997, called Everybody's Golf outside North America), made by Camelot for the PlayStation, gave golf cartoon characters and an easy-to-learn meter. Camelot went on to make Mario Golf (1999) for the N64, which brought in a huge number of players who had never watched a round of golf.

Meanwhile EA's series became Tiger Woods 99 PGA Tour Golf in 1998, and the Tiger Woods games were the best-known golf sims for the next fifteen years.

Analogue sticks and motion controls

In the 2000s, sims moved to analogue stick swings, where the tempo of your thumb movement mattered. In 2006, Wii Sports went further: you swung the controller like a club, and golf became a living-room game for families.

Sims, course editors and real tours

HB Studios' The Golf Club (2014) put a course designer at its centre, and that line became the PGA Tour 2K series from 2020. EA's run continued with Rory McIlroy PGA Tour (2015) and EA Sports PGA Tour (2023).

Phones, browsers and small games

The biggest recent change is where people play. Browser golf like WGT appeared in the late 2000s. Phones brought quick head-to-head games such as Golf Clash, and minimalist ones such as Desert Golfing (2014). Indie studios mixed golf with other genres: Golf Story turned it into an RPG, and What the Golf? (2019) turned it into a comedy puzzle game.

The retro look came back too, as a choice rather than a limit: see retro golf games.

Where Mashy fits

Mashy borrows from the early eras: pixel art, a top-down 3/4 view and a three-tap timing meter. It's built for how people play now, though. It runs in a phone or desktop browser with nothing to install, each course is nine short holes played with irons, wedges and a putter, and a daily course gives everyone the same pins and wind.

Frequently asked questions

What was the first golf video game?

It depends on how you define it, and early claims are hard to pin down. One of the first widely sold home console golf games was Atari's Golf for the 2600, released around 1980. Nintendo's Golf for the NES followed in 1984 and reached a far bigger audience.

Who invented the three-click swing in golf games?

No single person is credited with inventing it, but Access Software's Leader Board (1986) is widely recognised as the game that popularised it. Click once to start the swing, once to set power and once to set accuracy. Most golf games used a version of it for the next twenty years.

What is the longest-running golf video game series?

EA's golf series is one of the longest. It began as PGA Tour Golf in 1990, became the Tiger Woods PGA Tour games from 1998, then continued as Rory McIlroy PGA Tour and EA Sports PGA Tour. Nintendo's Mario Golf series has also run since 1999.

Are old golf games still playable today?

Many are. Some classic console golf games appear in subscription retro libraries or re-release collections, and others can be played on original hardware. Line-ups change over time, so check what is currently available before paying for a service to play one particular game.

Is there a modern golf game that plays like the classics?

Yes. Several modern games use pixel art and a timing meter on purpose. Mashy is one of them: a free browser game with a three-tap swing, top-down holes and nine-hole pitch and putt courses that you can play on a phone or a laptop without downloading anything.

Nine short holes. Irons, chips and putts. Free in your browser, no download.
