Three-Click Swing Meter Tips

· 5 min read

The secret to a three-click swing meter is that the three taps are not equal. The first just starts things, the second is a decision about distance, and the third is the only real test of timing. Get the second tap right with a plan, give the third your full attention, and most of your wild shots disappear.

These tips suit most press-power-accuracy meters, with examples from Mashy.

Know what each tap does

TapWhat it doesWhat goes wrong
FirstStarts the backswingRushing it, so you're not ready for the next two
SecondSets the powerGuessing, so the ball flies long or short
ThirdSets the strike as the marker comes backEarly pulls it left, late pushes it right, missed tops it

When a shot goes wrong, ask which tap caused it: short or long is a power problem, left or right is a timing problem.

Before you tap: choose the club, then the power

Most power mistakes happen before the swing starts. In Mashy, each iron has a set carry: 150 yards for the 7 iron down to 66 for the lob wedge. A dotted notch on the meter shows the power you need to reach your aim spot.

  1. Put the aim spot where you want the ball to land, not always on the flag.
  2. Pick the club whose full carry is a little more than you need.
  3. Look at where the notch sits, so you know where your second tap is going.

Less power means a shorter shot, which is how you chip. If you're new to the clubs, the golf club distance chart shows how carry steps down through the bag.

Tips for the power tap

  • Aim for the notch, not near it. Stopping just short and stopping just past are both easy to do when you're thinking about the third tap already.
  • Adjust for wind before you swing. Into the wind, the ball needs more; downwind, less. Check the wind indicator first, then move your aim and power together.
  • Don't fix a timing problem with power. If the last shot went right, the answer isn't to hit it harder.

Tips for the strike tap

This is where shots are won and lost.

  • Watch the marker, not the golfer. The animation is fun but your eyes need to be on the sweet spot.
  • Find a rhythm. Many players count in their head, "one, two... three", and keep the same tempo every time. A steady rhythm repeats better than a reaction.
  • Use the same finger or key every time. On desktop the Space bar swings in Mashy, which many people find steadier than a mouse.
  • Don't flinch after a bad shot. Missing late often leads to over-correcting and missing early next time. Stay with your normal rhythm.

Read your misses

Every miss on a three-tap meter tells you something.

  • Ball curves left (draw or hook): you tapped early. You're anticipating; wait a fraction longer.
  • Ball curves right (fade or slice): you tapped late. You're reacting; start moving your finger as the marker approaches.
  • Ball is topped: you missed the third tap and topped it. You lost concentration after setting the power.

If your miss is consistent, you can play it. A player who fades most shots can aim slightly left and let the ball drift back. Real golfers do exactly this. Hook vs slice explains the real-world version.

Bunker shots change the misses

From sand, a mistimed strike behaves differently in Mashy. An early miss is heavy or fat and comes up short. A late miss is bladed or thin and runs out. A low shot can catch the lip and roll back in, while a high one can plug as a fried egg and lose distance. So in a bunker, a clean third tap matters more than a perfect power setting.

Practise in Mashy

Mashy's Practice mode lets you play any hole of the selected course as often as you like, which is the best way to groove your rhythm. Pick one hole, hit the same shot ten times, and note where each miss went.

The aim guide can be switched on in Settings, and the Pro Shop sells irons with a bigger sweet spot for coins, but they're optional. The stock Hickory Mashies are perfectly good once your timing is steady.

Frequently asked questions

Why do my shots keep going left in golf games?

In most three-click golf games, a ball curving left means you pressed the accuracy button too early. In Mashy, an early third tap pulls the ball left with a draw or hook. Try waiting a fraction longer and keeping a steady rhythm rather than reacting to the marker.

Why does my ball go right on a swing meter?

A ball curving right usually means a late accuracy press. In Mashy, a late third tap pushes the ball right with a fade or slice. Start moving your finger as the marker approaches the sweet spot, rather than waiting until you see it arrive.

What happens if you miss the third tap in Mashy?

If you don't make the third tap at all, the golfer tops the ball, which gives you a weak, low shot instead of a proper strike. It usually happens when you relax after setting the power, so keep your focus until the strike.

How do I know how much power to use in Mashy?

A dotted notch on the swing meter shows the power needed to reach your aim spot. Choose a club whose full carry is a little longer than the shot, set your aim spot where you want the ball to land, and stop the power tap on the notch.

Is it better to use a keyboard or a mouse for a swing meter?

Use whatever lets you repeat the same movement. Many players find a single key steadier than a mouse click because there's less to move. In Mashy on desktop, the Space bar swings, and on a phone you tap the screen.
