Golf Challenges for Friends

· 5 min read

A good golf challenge for friends is one clear goal, the same for everyone, with a winner by the end of the day. It turns a normal round into a story to tell, and it gives a beginner something to aim for besides the scorecard.

On-course challenges

1. The one-club round

Play nine holes with a single club plus a putter (or even no putter). A 7 iron is the classic pick. You'll learn more about half shots and touch in one round than in a month of normal golf.

2. The par streak

Who can make the most pars in a row? Bogey-golfers can make it a bogey streak instead. A streak resets the moment you go over the target score.

3. No three-putts

Finish the round without a single three-putt. Anyone who manages it wins; anyone who doesn't buys the first round of drinks. See how to stop three-putting for help.

4. Fairway finder

Count fairways hit off the tee on par 4s and par 5s. Most fairways wins, regardless of score.

5. Up and down

Each time you miss a green, try to get up and down: chip on and one putt. Most up and downs wins. It's the best short-game test there is.

6. Nine-ball ladder

Putt to stop just past markers at three, six and nine paces, three balls each. One point for every ball that finishes within a putter's length of its marker.

7. Around the world

Place balls in a circle round a hole, from short range. Hole every putt in a row to go up a step; miss, and you start again. First round the circle wins.

8. Chip-off

Five chips each from the same spot. Closest total distance wins, or measure only the best three.

Online challenges in Mashy

Mashy is a free pixel-art golf game in the browser, which makes it handy for challenges between real rounds, or with friends who don't play golf.

9. The clean card

Finish the daily course with no holes over par. On the shared result grid, that means no red squares. It sounds easy until the wind gets up on Salty Links.

10. Under 30 feet

In Closest to the pin mode you hit one tee shot on each of the course's par 3s, and the feet from the pin add up. Set a target total, say 30 feet, and see who can beat it first. Inside 3 feet on a single shot earns a coin too.

11. The grand tour

Play a stroke round on all five courses (Mashy Park, Dogleg Downs, Salty Links, Puffin Point and Pinewood) over a week. Lowest combined score to par wins. The Mashy courses guide describes them all.

12. Birdie hunt

Most birdies in a week's dailies wins. In Mashy only a putt can drop, so every birdie means a good approach and a holed putt. On a par 3, a birdie 2 is the best you can do.

How to make a challenge stick

  • Agree the rules first. Do mulligans count? Does a gimme count as holed? Settle it before anyone tees off.
  • One attempt each. Repeated attempts favour whoever has the most free time. Mashy's daily helps here, because only your first card counts.
  • Keep a running table. One point per challenge won, and a champion at the end of the month.
  • Give the loser a forfeit, not a bill. Wearing the silliest outfit, choosing the next challenge, or making the coffee.

Try it in Mashy

Pick a challenge, open Mashy, and invite your friends to your clubhouse so everyone's daily scores line up on TODAY'S BOARD. For ready-made group formats, see golf games to play with friends remotely.

Frequently asked questions

What is a fun golf challenge for beginners?

The nine-ball ladder on the practice green is a good start, because it rewards distance control rather than power. On the course, a bogey streak works well: count how many holes in a row you can score bogey or better. Both give beginners a target that's within reach.

What is the one-club golf challenge?

You play a round using just one club, often a 7 iron, plus a putter if you like. You have to hit full shots, half shots, chips and sometimes putts with the same club. It teaches touch and creativity, and scores are often closer to normal than players expect.

How do you score a golf challenge with friends?

Decide the measure before anyone plays: most pars in a row, fewest three-putts, or lowest total feet from the pin. Give one point to each challenge winner and keep a running table over a month. One attempt each keeps it fair between busy and less busy friends.

Can you get a hole in one in Mashy?

No. In Mashy only a putt can drop, so tee shots and chips that reach the cup lip out. On a par 3, the best realistic score is a birdie 2: hit the green from the tee, then hole the putt. That makes birdie hunts a fair challenge.

What is a good online golf challenge to send a friend?

A clean card on the Mashy daily, meaning no hole over par, is easy to explain and easy to check from the shared grid. The daily has the same pins and wind for everyone that day, and your first card counts, so both players face exactly the same test.
